Easter Sun protection support- Melanoma Fund

For the past four years, the Melanoma Fund has worked with the DfE and local authorities to embed sun safety in the HAF programme through accreditation to the

Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code—a free resource supporting the implementation of effective sun protection protocols.

This Easter and summer, they are enhancing their support as some of your providers may lack a sun policy, and some staff may not have the knowledge or confidence to ensure sun protection is properly implemented—an issue that can be easily addressed.

Embedding sun safety in HAF

To ensure consistency, they propose the following measures:

  1. Prepare – Establish and follow a sun safety policy.

  2. Communicate – Inform staff, parents, and children about the importance of arriving

sun prepared.

  1. Monitor UV index – When 3 or above, implement protection, even if overcast.

  2. Protect – Require appropriate clothing, hats, sunglasses, and SPF30+ sunscreen.

  3. Shade – Encourage shade use during breaks.

  4. Hydrate – Ensure water is always available.

  5. Lead by example – Staff should model sun-safe behaviour.

  6. Educate – Teach staff and children why sun safety matters.

To make these steps easy and free to implement, providers can sign up for the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code. Additionally, at least one staff member per provider can complete their Sunguarding on-line course to ensure ongoing education. Both resources can be accessed at www.melanoma-fund.co.uk.

To further support sun safety, they offer sunboards with sunscreen dispensers, ensuring all children have access to protection: www.melanoma-fund.co.uk/sunscreen-support.
